Internships in International Studies

An internship experience can enhance the I.S. major by providing direct experience working in the foreign affairs bureaucracy, international business, or an international/non-governmental organization in either the United States or abroad. Internships are particularly useful for students with an area of emphasis in one of the four global affairs areas. Often students “intern” with foreign affairs agencies involved in national security issues or policies concerning international development or the environment. Internships are often available in the private sector, and work in a foreign corporation is a valuable experience for students in the international business area of emphasis.

Some of our students who have internships arrange for them through the Washington Center or Internships and Academic Seminars in located in nation’s capitol, but students are welcomed to arrange their experiences on their own. In addition, the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences has developed some of its own internship opportunities, including internships with the West Virginia Trade Office in Munich, Germany; the German Program’s summer internship in international business, a soon to be announced summer internship in British politics and Government in London, expanding set of international internships managed through the Career Services Center, and intelligence analysis internships. The latter three opportunities are now under development, so watch this space for further information in the near future.
