Areas of Emphasis

This segment of the major is the most substantial and has the student specialize in either one of two types areas of emphasis (“AOE”): “regional” tracks and “global affairs” tracks. However, because there is usually some “overlap” in the courses required for the regional and global affairs tracks, interested students often concentrate in dual tracks, e.g., international business and East Asia or environmental issues with respect to Latin America.

Regional tracks are focused on the history, culture, politics, and economics of a particular region. Students concentrating in one of these area are required to pursue advanced foreign language appropriate to the region and, ideally, have a study abroad experience in that region. The areas we offer are:

Africa and The Middle East
The Americas
East Asia
Europe

Global Affairs tracks are broadly focused on the complexity of international/ transnational relations with respect to a particular set of issues in global affairs. Each global affairs track requires the student to take general skills courses associated with that area of international affairs. The tracks currently offered are:

International Business
Diplomacy & International Security
International Development
Intelligence and National Security
International Environment
