Areas of Emphasis – The Americas

This area of emphasis offers courses focused on the Western Hemisphere. Spanish language is, of course, highly relevant for much of this region and, as such, six hours of advanced Spanish is required for this area of emphasis. Students select from four analytic courses (12 hours) in international/comparative economics, development, political geography, international politics, U.S. foreign policy, and/or up to six additional hours of advanced Spanish language. Six additional courses (18 hours) are required that deal specifically with the region’s political systems, cultures, and general history, as well as foreign language courses on the region’s culture. The IS Program’s Model Organization of States experience also counts towards this are of emphasis. A study abroad experience is highly recommended, and any approved courses taken abroad can be used to meet the above course requriements. WVU is affiliated with several study abroad programs in Latin America, and IS majors regularly participate in WVU sponsored trips to Cuba and the Carribean. See these and other programs at the study abroad section.
