Areas of Emphasis – Europe
This area of emphasis offers general courses on European affairs as well as ones on specific countries within the region. This is rather broad area of emphasis, and students typically focus on a particular country such as France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, or the United Kingdom. Required courses for this concentration are two advanced language classes (six hours) in either French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish. Four analytic courses (12 hours) enable students to select courses international/comparative economics, political geography, international politics, U.S. foreign policy, and/or up to six additional hours of foreign language. Six additional courses (18 hours) are required examining the politics, geography, or history of the region overall, as well as courses on the history or culture of specific countries. The program’s Model U.N. experience can count towards this requirement when WVU represents a European country. A study abroad experience is highly recommended, and approved courses taken abroad can count towards the above requirements. There are numerous study abroad opportunities throughout Europe; see the study abroad link for programs with which WVU is affiliated.
