Areas of Emphasis – Diplomacy & International Security

This area of emphasis is designed primarily for students with broad interests in international politics and, as such, career aspirations ranging from diplomacy (e.g,. the foreign service or international organizations), the analysis of contemporary conflicts within the policy community, and/or academia with a specialization in international relations. Required courses include two courses in policy analysis (research design and statistics) and two courses in international political analysis (the “politics of war and peace” and political geography). Students also elect four additional courses (12 hours) in international politics, international and comparative economics, U.S. diplomatic history and foreign policy analysis, foreign policy analysis, and terrorism. This area of emphasis also has students take three cross-cultural courses (9 hours) for a region of the world of primary interest: Europe, East Asia, the Americas, or Africa/Middle East.
